    Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions can an osteopath help with?

Osteopathic treatment may help with a wide range of musculoskeletal issues, including:

    • Back and neck pain
    • Sciatica
    • Joint pain and stiffness
    • Sports injuries
    • Muscle tension and postural problems
    • Headaches related to tension or posture
    • Shoulder and hip pain
    • Arthritis-related discomfort
    • Pregnancy-related back or pelvic pain
    • Workplace and repetitive strain injuries

If you are unsure whether osteopathy is suitable for your condition, please contact us for advice.

What happens during the first appointment?

    Your initial consultation will include:

    • A detailed discussion about your symptoms and medical history
    • A physical assessment and movement examination
    • Explanation of findings and diagnosis
    • Hands-on treatment where appropriate
    • Advice on exercises, posture, and self-management

Please allow approximately 45–60 minutes for your first appointment.

What should I wear to my appointment?

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows easy movement. Depending on the area being treated, you may be asked to remove outer layers of clothing. Your comfort and privacy will always be respected.

    Is osteopathic treatment painful?

Treatment is generally gentle and tailored to your comfort level. Some techniques may cause mild discomfort or temporary soreness, similar to post-exercise stiffness, but this usually settles within 24–48 hours.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your condition, symptoms, lifestyle, and overall health. Some patients experience improvement within a few sessions, while longer-term conditions may require ongoing care and rehabilitation support.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No referral is required to see an osteopath. You can book directly with us at any time.

    Are osteopaths regulated?

In the UK, osteopaths are regulated healthcare professionals and must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).

    Can osteopathy help during pregnancy?

Yes. Osteopathic treatment can help relieve common pregnancy-related discomforts such as lower back pain, pelvic pain, and postural strain. Treatment is adapted carefully for each stage of pregnancy.

Is osteopathy suitable for infants and older adults?

Yes. Osteopathy can be adapted for people of all ages, from infants to older adults. Techniques are always tailored to the individual patient’s needs and health status.

Will I receive exercises or advice?

Yes. We believe long-term improvement involves more than hands-on treatment alone. You may receive personalised advice on posture, ergonomics, stretching, strengthening exercises, and lifestyle habits to support recovery.

Can I claim treatment through private health insurance?

Many private health insurance providers offer cover for osteopathic treatment. We recommend checking directly with your insurer regarding your level of cover and any requirements before your appointment.

What if I need scans or further medical investigation?

If we believe additional medical assessment or imaging is needed, we will advise you accordingly and may recommend referral to your GP or another healthcare professional.

How do I book an appointment?

Appointments can be booked online, by phone, or by email. Please contact our clinic and we will be happy to assist you in finding a suitable appointment time.

What should I do if I need to cancel my appointment?

We kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or appointment changes whenever possible. Late cancellations or missed appointments may incur a fee.

    Is everything discussed confidential?

Yes. All consultations, medical information, and treatment records are handled in strict confidence in accordance with professional and data protection standards.

The Mummy MOT - The Postnatal Check Every Mother Deserves

What is The Mummy MOT ?

Pregnancy and childbirth place significant demands on the body, particularly the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. Many women continue to experience weakness in these areas following birth, which can contribute to reduced core stability, back pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, bladder or bowel symptoms, and discomfort during everyday activities.  A Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal assessment designed to support recovery after pregnancy and birth. The initial assessment is ideally carried out 6–8 weeks after delivery, following your GP postnatal check, although women can benefit from treatment and rehabilitation at any stage after having children — even years later.

To achieve the best outcomes, we recommend an initial assessment followed by three follow-up appointments. This allows time to tailor and progress your rehabilitation programme according to your individual recovery, lifestyle and goals. We understand that caring for an infant can be demanding, and we will work at a pace that feels comfortable and manageable for you and your family. Appointments can be booked individually or as part of a treatment package.

    Initial Assessment Includes:

    • Comprehensive postural assessment
    • Breathing pattern and core function assessment
    • Pelvic floor assessment
    • Examination for abdominal separation (diastasis recti)
    • Scar tissue assessment, where applicable
    • Screening for bladder, bowel and sexual health concerns
    • A written report outlining findings and a personalised rehabilitation plan

    Follow-Up Appointments Include:

    • Advice and education on safe movement and daily activities, including lifting and carrying your      baby
    • A bespoke rehabilitation and exercise programme tailored to your recovery and lifestyle
    • Hands-on treatment for areas of dysfunction identified during assessment
    • Scar tissue therapy where appropriate

Our aim is to provide professional, supportive and evidence-based postnatal care to help you regain confidence, strength and comfort following pregnancy and birth. Further appropriate resources will be provided in your individual report after the initial consultation.  For further information please contact info@jtosteopathy.co.uk

    Pure Beginnings Cranial Therapy

What is Pure Beginnings Cranial Therapy?

Pure Beginnings Cranial is a gentle, hands-on, non invasive treatment used with infants to support comfort, movement, and overall development.

Practitioners use very light touch to assess and release tension in a baby’s head, neck, and body. It’s commonly sought for issues such as feeding difficulties, unsettled behaviour, reflux, or head shape concerns. The therapy aims to encourage natural alignment and relaxation, helping babies feel more comfortable and balanced.
